Ernst Optimistic on Post-Recess Farm Bill Despite Senate Stalemate
In a relaxed interview at the 2026 Iowa State Fair, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) discussed the stalled 2026 Farm Bill with Iowa Agribusiness Radio Network host Dustin. She expressed optimism that negotiations during the August recess could yield a bipartisan deal for conference committee, citing the need for Prop 12 relief for Iowa hog producers, year-round E15 sales (included in the Senate version but not House), and a SNAP compromise to secure 60 votes. Ernst noted the Senate Ag Committee is "one person short" due to Sen. Mitch McConnell's absence, which contributed to the recent 10-11 party-line failure to advance the bill. The conversation also covered small business challenges (labor, energy costs), H-2A visa reform difficulties, the easy passage of a continuing resolution (described as 80-something to 11, actually 90-6), and her pride in ag policy, veterans' support, and "making them squeal" legislation. It ended with light fare talk of fair foods.
