Iraq rice production rebounds with rains but climate risks persist

Jun 24, 2026

The Reuters segment reports that rice farmers in Iraq's Najaf region, including Alah al Ibrahimi, have resumed planting after years of drought restrictions. Heavy rains and improved river flows enabled the largest rice cultivation area in four years, supporting government self-sufficiency goals. Production is projected to reach over 330,000 short tons this season after near-zero output in 2025, with most rice directed to the national food ration system; imports of roughly 882,000 tons are still expected. Ministry and climate experts note the recovery remains fragile given Iraq's high climate vulnerability and variable water storage, which rose sharply from lows last year.
